The Mother Earth Series is a series of oil paintings on canvas, each representing the Earth as a female icon. In each painting Mother Earth communicates with us through the symbolism of the natural world.
I tried to make these paintings visually beautiful, as we often see nature. On closer view there are the effects of climate change. Mother Earth’s senses are gagged by flowers or butterflies, which symbolize humanity's neglect of her to our own detriment.
Yet she continues to speak her message of love through blossoming flowers, buzzing bees, ocean waves, and twisting trees.
The paintings are meant to encourage us to consider our relationship and identity with the Earth and with nature. In this series I explore the strengths and vulnerabilities of nature and humanity.
My Mother Earth Series is painted with richly pigmented water-soluble oil paints made by Royal Talens, a paint company that is committed to sustainability. I paint on cotton canvases that I texture myself with a heavy-bodied gesso and each canvas has a 1.5 inch wood frame.
